Kansas football has been lucky the past couple of years to not fall victim to the uncharted territory of the transfer portal. In fact, Kansas has been able to utilize the transfer portal to their advantage and continue to get talented players into the program. Let’s just hope that will still be the case when the Division I transfer portal opens up January 2nd. But in the meantime, Kansas was able to tap into the well of Division II talent as their transfer portal window has already been opened.
Kansas landed their first commitment in the transfer portal by defensive tackle Jibriel Conde out of Division II powerhouse Grand Valley State University.
Conde is 6 foot 5 inches, 290 pounds and recorded 30 tackles, 6.5 TFLs, and 2.5 sacks in 10 games for the Lakers.
After his breakout season, Conde entered the Division II transfer portal and immediately caught the attention of Power 4 schools such as Wisconsin, Michigan State, Auburn, and TCU. Conde was originally committed to Wisconsin but after an official visit to Kansas, he flipped and is now committed to the Jayhawks.
Conde will be an excellent piece to replace a defensive tackle room that is losing a lot of veteran leadership.
But, unfortunately, as we all know; the transfer portal giveth, the transfer portal taketh away.
Kansas already has 7 players who intend to enter the transfer portal once the portal officially opens on January 2nd. The most notable name of the bunch is Safety Lyrik Rawls.
Rawls originally transferred in to Kansas from Oklahoma State and had an excellent year this year for the ‘hawks. Rawls played in 77% of the snaps on defense (second most on the team) and also was the second leading tackler on the team. He also finished the year with 1 TFL, 1 interception, and 69.7 PFF grade.
Kansas is also losing four other scholarship players, and two preferred walk-ons:
Running Back – Johnny Thompson Jr.
Tight End – Jaden Hamm
Safety – Damani Maxson
Linebacker – JaCorey Stewart
Wide Receiver – Bryce Cohoon
Punter – Effren Jasso
